This boat ran up to speed on the sea trial, got hauled for bottom paint, then overheated on the way back to the dock. Eddie reaches in blind, one hand, and winds the destroyed impeller out of a Cummins 5.9L. Then he tracks down every missing vane in the coolers.

The 12V92 Detroit tucks its pump in the back and doesn’t leave you much room. One bad pull can score the housing or leave vane pieces in the system. Eddie walks through the whole job with the ImpelPro Large Impeller Puller, right through to a new impeller going in without a hammer.

Barely enough room for your hands on this Cummins Onan, with the fuel line right in the way and almost no swing for a wrench. The hoses stay on, the pump stays in, and the ImpelPro Standard Impeller Puller winds the impeller out anyway.

The pump is always just far enough back, the hoses are always in the way, and there’s never enough room for a proper grip. On this Onan generator, Eddie brings a 9/16 wrench and has the impeller out in under a minute.

Most impeller pullers have knobs on both sides. Tighten them down, the tool cocks, and now you’re fighting the tool instead of the impeller. ImpelPro is bearing-driven, so it stays centered the whole pull. Eddie does it with two fingers on the ratchet.

Four years on this impeller, and Eddie brought a crescent wrench on purpose. You don’t need a pile of special tools. The six teeth on the ImpelPro Standard Impeller Puller bite into the hub, and they bite harder the more the impeller hangs on. Eddie keeps turning slow until it comes loose, then finishes with his fingers.

Here’s just the removal from that 12V-92 Detroit, if you only have a minute. A bad pull back here scores the housing, so watch how the arms get set before anything starts turning.

A heat exchanger bracket in the way, wire looms across the pump face, and hoses right where your second hand should go. The bracket isn’t moving, so the tool has to work around it. One hand, pump in place, and out comes the impeller.

Look at the space before you watch the pull. Generators are always boxed in, and this Cummins Onan doesn’t leave room to swing anything. That’s the whole story.
