Welcome to the ImpelPro® FAQ page. Whether you’re a DIY boater, a marine mechanic, or just curious about impeller maintenance, you’re in the right place. Below you’ll find quick answers to common questions categorized for easier browsing.

Product & Fit

  • ImpelPro is a bearing‑driven tool that grips flexible‑vane impellers and winds them out smoothly—so you avoid prying and damage to the pump housing or shaft. It is a compact puller made for tight spaces. Inboard marine engines only.

    • Standard fits impellers 1‑9/16″ to 2‑9/16″.

    • Large fits 2‑9/16″ to 4‑5/8″.

Measure vane tip‑to‑tip across the center of the impeller, not the hub. If you’re impeller is 2 9/16”, we recommend using the Standard. How to Measure

  • Yes—ImpelPro removes rubber impellers from all major brands as long as the impeller size falls within the tool’s range.

  • No. We offer two sizes to ensure a secure, non‑slip grip and safe removal. Using the correct size prevents slippage and damage.

  • No. ImpelPro is designed for inboard engines (including marine generators.)

  • Usually no. The compact design fits tight spaces, but access varies by engine layout. If access is limited, removing the pump may help.

  • Shut off the engine and shut off the water to the cooling system by closing the seacock (ball-valve).

  • Marine‑grade 316L stainless steel and 356‑T6 aluminum alloy (Brinell Hardness 90) for corrosion resistance and strength.

  • Puller body with thumbscrew, two different sized rods and card with QR code for instructions.

  • Yes. The design is intended to remove stuck or partially melted impellers without damaging the pump when used as directed.

  • No. Pliers can shred vanes or harm the pump housing. Use a puller designed for the job.

  • ImpelPro pullers may look similar to tools on the market, but they do not work the same. ImpelPro has a bearing for leverage. It does the heavy lifting.

Lube the threads. Insert the puller arms into the water pump housing avoiding the cam and centered across the diameter. Engage the teeth with the impeller by hand tightening the thumbscrew, and use a 9/16” wrench on the nut to wind the impeller out smoothly. For instructional videos and step-by-step instructions, please visit How To Use ImpelPro Impeller Puller.

  • Ensure the arms are fully seated and centered, tighten the thumbscrew by hand until the teeth set, and confirm you’re using the right‑size tool for your impeller.

  • Use a 9/16″ wrench or socket on the top nut—don’t use tools on the thumbscrew or arms.

  • Yes—step‑by‑step video and printable PDF instructions are available on our “How to Use” page and via the QR code in your package. How To Use ImpelPro Impeller Puller.

  • Yes. The tool is designed for onboard use if a pump fails while boating. Turn off the seacock valve prior to opening the face plate of the water pump.

  • We recommend every 100 hours or once per year—whichever comes first. Always check your engine manual.

  • Cracked or missing vanes, reduced water flow, or unusual whirring/squealing noises. Your engine may start to overheat. If you put your hand on the face plate to the pump, and it is warm, it is likely your impeller has failed.
