STEP-BY-STEP: HOW TO REPLACE A VOLVO PENTA IPS 600 IMPELLER WITHOUT
REMOVING THE PUMP
1. Access the IPS 600 raw water pump
The raw water pump on this Volvo Penta IPS 600 is tucked deep in the aft section of the engine compartment. Before starting, Eddie points out how tight the space is and why most people dislike this job.
2. Locate and isolate the water inlet
The seawater inlet and valve sit far back in the compartment. Before opening the pump, isolate the raw water system so water does not keep feeding the pump during service.
3. Remove the pump cover screws
With limited room for fingers and tools, Eddie removes the cover screws from the raw water pump. This is one of the slowest parts of the job because the access and working angle are awkward.
4. Inspect the impeller before removal
Once the cover is off, inspect the impeller. In this case several vanes are cracked, damaged, or partially missing. Even with some vanes still attached, the impeller is no longer moving water reliably.
5. Position the puller in the tight space
Eddie uses the ImpelPro Standard Impeller Puller and works from behind the pump. The tool stays centered on the shaft, which lets the impeller come straight out without removing the pump assembly. Its recessed head is what lets it seat at this awkward angle.
6. Remove the old impeller
With the tool tightened and the center rod aligned, Eddie turns the puller with a 9/16-inch wrench. The impeller comes out cleanly from the cramped space without removing the raw water pump, the belt, or the surrounding assembly.
7. Clean and inspect the pump area
After the old impeller is out, inspect the pump flange and sealing surface. Check the O-ring or gasket carefully and replace it if it is damaged, flattened, or no longer sealing.
8. Install the new impeller
Lubricate the new impeller and work it into the pump bore. In a tight IPS compartment this takes patience, because the flange is small, the hose is close, and hand clearance is limited.
9. Reinstall the cover and gasket
With a new, lubricated gasket or O-ring seated, reinstall the pump cover. Start all fasteners before tightening so the cover seats evenly.
10. Run a water test
Open the raw water system back up, run the engine, and check for water flow. Steady flow confirms the pump is moving water and the job is done.

The hardest part of a Volvo Penta IPS 600 impeller replacement is not understanding what needs to be done. It is getting the work done in the space available. When a pump is buried in a tight compartment, pulling the entire pump can turn a routine impeller job into a much larger service, with belt, hose, alignment, and fastener steps stacking up. A centered puller that works on the shaft line removes the impeller without side-loading the pump or taking the pump assembly off the engine. Less disassembly means fewer chances for a new problem.

Tight raw water pump access. The IPS 600 pump location leaves very little room for hands, tools, and camera visibility. That is why many owners and mechanics remove more parts than expected just to reach the impeller.
Cracked or missing impeller vanes. An impeller can look mostly intact and still have cracked vanes, missing chunks, or hardened rubber. Once vanes are damaged, the pump may not move enough seawater to keep the engine cool.
Missing vane pieces downstream. If a vane broke off, account for it. Loose pieces can lodge in the cooling system and restrict flow, so track down any missing rubber before you run the engine.
Poor water flow after replacement. After installing a new impeller, check for water flow. No flow or weak flow can mean trapped air, a closed seacock, a blockage, or debris downstream.
O-ring or gasket problems. If the gasket or O-ring comes out during disassembly, inspect it before reuse. A damaged, flattened, or poorly seated seal can leak or let air into the suction side of the raw water pump.
Pump removal vs. in-place service. Removing the entire raw water pump gives more access, but it adds time and more chances for alignment, belt, hose, or fastener issues. If the impeller can be pulled in place, the job stays cleaner and more controlled.

If you are a Volvo Penta owner and your setup looks like this, how do you get the impeller out?
I have heard a lot of bad things about these specific IPS 600s and how difficult they are to service.
Hey everyone, Eddie from ImpelPro here. Today we are working on a pair of Volvo Penta IPS 600s. The starboard engine is all the way back in the aft quarter, and we are also going to be working around a Cummins Onan generator.
Look how tight this area is.
For this job, we are going to put the small tool to use. One helpful thing on these setups is that they have plug ports, but the water inlet is still way back there by the yellow handle.
The room I am working with down here is very tight, so I will try to keep my hands out of the way and start removing the screws.
There is barely any finger room at this angle. One side is tight, and the other side has even less room.
Hopefully this pull goes well and speeds up the process. I am working in an awkward position, switching my legs and hanging on by a thread.
Now we have the first look at the impeller. A couple of vanes are no longer fully attached, and some pieces are damaged.
Let us bring the camera down and look closer.
This vane has chunks missing. This one has heavy cracking. A few others are still attached, but they are not in great shape. This impeller is not ideal for moving water anymore, so we are going to take it out and install a new one.
When I removed the hose, the gasket or O-ring came out. When we go back together, we will put a new one on there.
This impeller is in rough shape. It is time for it to be replaced.
The ImpelPro Standard puller should work well here. There is something in the way, but we can move it aside enough to get the tool into position.
I am holding the camera with one hand and tightening the tool with the other. It is a tight working area, but with the small tool everything works off the center line, and there is still room behind the pump.
We will keep tightening it down. The camera is a little awkward because there is almost no room here.
The knob is tight, and now we are on the 9/16-inch drive.
The important part is that we do not have to remove the whole pump assembly to get this impeller out. We are able to pull it in place.
This is why tool geometry matters. One tool, one pull, and the impeller comes out. We are not taking the pump off, removing the belt, or turning this into a bigger job.
The impeller is worn in different areas, especially near the ends of the vanes. It was definitely ready to come out.
During the install section, Eddie works the new impeller into the pump bore in a very tight space. The flange is small, the hose is in the way, and the closest areas near the block are difficult to reach. The new impeller is lubricated, aligned, and rolled into place carefully.
The impeller is now installed, and the flange is clean.
Next, the new gasket is lubricated and set in place. The cover is reinstalled, and the system is prepared for a water test.
The water line appears to be slightly below this point, so once everything is tightened and opened back up, we will run it and check for water.
When the engine runs, that is when we confirm water flow and make sure there are no leaks or alarms.
